Ourika Valley: The Complete Visitor's Guide

6 min read

Just 60 kilometres southeast of Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is one of the most accessible and rewarding day trips from the Red City. Nestled in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, it offers a refreshing contrast to the desert heat of Marrakech.

The drive itself is part of the experience. As you leave the Haouz plain behind, the landscape transforms into terraced hillsides, walnut groves and traditional Berber villages clinging to the slopes. The air gets cooler and the scenery more dramatic with every kilometre.

The village of Setti Fatma, at the end of the paved road, is the starting point for a short hike to the famous seven waterfalls. The first waterfall is reachable in about 30 minutes and offers a spectacular reward. A local guide is recommended for the upper falls.

Along the way, stop at a traditional Berber home for mint tea and learn about daily life in the mountains. On Mondays, the Tnine Ourika market is a vibrant spectacle of local produce, spices and handcrafts.

Practical tips: wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sunscreen and a hat in summer, and carry cash as most places do not accept cards. The valley is accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures.

A private day trip from Marrakech to Ourika Valley typically takes about 8 hours and includes hotel pickup, scenic stops, a Berber village visit and time at the waterfalls. It is one of the most popular excursions for good reason.
