Essaouira Day Trip: What to See, Eat and Do

5 min read

Essaouira is the perfect antidote to Marrakech's heat and intensity. This laid-back Atlantic port town, about 2.5 hours west of the Red City, offers sea breezes, fresh seafood and a beautifully preserved UNESCO medina.

Start your visit at the Skala de la Ville, the impressive 18th-century sea ramparts that offer panoramic views of the ocean and the Iles Purpuraires. The cannons lining the walls and the crashing waves below create a dramatic scene.

The fishing port is a must-see: watch fishermen unload their catch, see the iconic blue boats bobbing in the harbour, and pick fresh fish to be grilled on the spot at one of the dockside stalls. It is the freshest seafood you will eat in Morocco.

The medina is a joy to explore on foot. Unlike Marrakech, it is compact and easy to navigate. Browse the many art galleries and artisan shops selling thuya wood crafts, silver jewellery and colourful textiles. The town has long attracted artists and musicians.

If time allows, take a stroll along the wide sandy beach south of the medina. It is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, and the sunset views are spectacular.

On the drive to Essaouira, stop at a traditional argan oil cooperative to learn about this uniquely Moroccan product and watch Berber women process the argan nuts by hand. It is a fascinating cultural experience.
